This special project will be constructed in two phases.
The project comprises a new botanical glasshouse and associated greenhouses with a total area of 3,216 m². The development will feature 15 different climate zones, providing the ideal growing conditions for more than 4,000 plant species, including Sweden's largest collection of tropical orchids, carnivorous plants and other rare botanical treasures. The innovative design focuses on energy efficiency, climate control and long-term sustainability, ensuring the garden remains a centre for biodiversity, education and research well into the future.
First phase
Together with main contractor Peab, we will start the first phase of construction in autumn 2024. In this phase, the botanical greenhouse and part of the greenhouses will be built. After completion, the special plants will be moved here, after which the old greenhouses will be demolished. Then the final phase, the construction of the remaining greenhouses, will start.
Quality and sustainability
The new greenhouses with different heights up to a maximum of 18 metres, have a modern and efficient design, focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility. These smart technical solutions and eco-friendly working methods will improve both the functionality and aesthetics of the Gothenburg Botanic Garden.
Diverse worlds with over 4,000 plant species
More than 15 different worlds will be created, each with its own specific plant species and climate. There will be more than 4,000 plant species, including Sweden's largest collection of tropical orchids, carnivorous plants and the rare Easter tree, which is extinct in its natural habitat. The improved facilities will make an important contribution to spreading knowledge about biodiversity and providing educational programmes for visitors of all ages.

Göteborgs botaniska trädgård
Göteborgs botaniska trädgård is the largest botanical garden in Sweden and one of the most important in Europe. The botanical garden covers an area 75 hectares in total. Due to the complexity of the project, we were chosen because we have completed several challenging projects for well-known botanical gardens such as Flora Köln, RHS Wisley, Bayan and Hortus Botanicus.
The challenges of building botanical greenhouses
Designing and building botanical greenhouses requires extensive knowledge of both nature and technology. From energy efficiency and condensation control to multiple climate zones and the proper execution of architectural vision, every detail must be perfectly thought out. With decades of experience, Smiemans Projecten knows how to overcome these challenges and creates sustainable, energy-efficient and beautiful glass structures for the world's leading botanical gardens.
