Roof renovation of the elephant enclosure at Blijdorp Zoo by Smiemans Projecten

Smiemans Projecten has commenced the roof renovation of the elephant enclosure at Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. The project involves the 1,221 m² roof structure, which Smiemans Projecten built itself in 1993.

After more than thirty years, the existing polycarbonate roof panels are due for replacement. During the renovation, the old panels will be removed, the entire structure will be thoroughly cleaned, and new light-transmitting, insulating roof panels will be installed. This will preserve the strong existing structure and ensure the roof is ready for the coming decades.

When selecting the materials, considerable attention was paid to the amount of daylight entering the enclosure. The new roofing allows plenty of natural light in whilst also offering good insulating properties. This is important for the comfort of the elephants, but also for the plants in the elephant enclosure. The work is being carried out deliberately before the colder nights set in, so that the elephants can once again enjoy a comfortable and sheltered enclosure during the autumn and winter.

Smiemans Projecten has extensive experience with specialised glass and greenhouse structures for zoos and public venues. The company has previously carried out projects for Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, amongst others. These types of projects bring together engineering, animal welfare, daylight, climate control and durability.
