Sustainable renovation
Smiemans Projecten is renovating the roof of the elephant enclosure at Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. This involves the roof that Smiemans Projecten itself constructed in 1993. After more than thirty years of service, the polycarbonate roof panels are being replaced and the existing structure is undergoing a sustainable refurbishment.
Renovation of the existing roof structure
During its construction in 1993, the elephant enclosure was fitted with a steel substructure supporting an aluminium roof structure and polycarbonate roof panels. During the renovation, all existing roof panels will be removed. The entire structure will then be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the installation of new roofing.
By retaining the existing supporting structure, the building’s lifespan is extended and the value of the original investment is preserved. Renovation is a sustainable and practical choice here: renewing where necessary, retaining what is still sound.
Plenty of daylight for the animals and plants
A highly light-transparent, insulating solution was chosen for the new roofing. This allows plenty of natural daylight to enter the elephant enclosure, whilst the roof also helps to improve the enclosure’s insulation.
This daylight is important for the atmosphere and comfort within the enclosure, but also for the plants growing there. In a zoo environment in particular, daylight, climate, animal welfare, safety and maintenance must all be well coordinated.
Ready for the coming decades
The work will be carried out at the end of August, so that the enclosure is ready before the colder nights set in. This will ensure that the elephants can once again enjoy a comfortable and sheltered enclosure during the autumn and winter.
With this roof renovation, Smiemans Projecten demonstrates that existing glass and greenhouse structures can be renovated in a sustainable and forward-looking manner with the right approach. In addition to Blijdorp Zoo, Smiemans Projecten has previously completed special projects for, amongst others, Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen.
