Start second Roll-Air Retail atrium

Atrium Hornbaek roof for garden

Smiemans Projecten has been commissioned to build a second atrium in Hornbaek, Denmark, identical to the first project currently under construction. Both atriums will cover the inner gardens of two residential complexes, creating comfortable, green spaces for year-round use and energy-efficient living.

As you can see on our latest video, the first residential building is rapidly taking shape. Once this building is completed, we will begin installing atrium with the Roll-Air Retail system. This advanced, climate-responsive roof that can open or close in just one minute. This innovative system ensures an ideal indoor climate in all weather conditions, combining flexibility, comfort and sustainability.

Designed around the courtyard garden, the residential complex offers residents direct access to a green and inviting space where they can relax, even in winter. With the addition of the atrium, this project demonstrates how modern architecture and smart technology can improve lives while promoting sustainable and flexible design solutions.

Why are atriums becoming increasingly popular in retail environments?

Retail atriums create attractive and comfortable spaces where visitors can spend more time. By introducing natural daylight and a stronger connection with the outdoor environment, atriums can enhance the overall visitor experience and contribute to a more inviting destination.

What are the challenges of building a large atrium?

Large atriums require careful consideration of structural loads, daylight levels, solar control, ventilation and long-term maintenance. These elements must work together to ensure a comfortable environment throughout the year.

How does a glass atrium support visitor comfort?

A well-designed atrium provides ample natural light while controlling heat build-up and glare. The combination of glazing, ventilation and solar shading helps maintain a pleasant indoor climate during different seasons.

Why is construction planning important for atrium projects?

Many atrium projects are realised in locations that remain operational during construction. Careful planning, coordination and logistics are therefore essential to minimise disruption and maintain safety throughout the building process.

What benefits does an atrium offer besides aesthetics?

In addition to creating an impressive architectural feature, atriums can improve orientation, increase daylight penetration, create gathering spaces and strengthen the identity of a building. They often become central spaces where visitors naturally meet and interact.
